| What is “The Green Doel”? “Doel” is Dutch, meaning “purpose.” The Green Doel is my Green purpose, an idea conceived in the midst of my midlife crisis as I pondered those age-old, meaning-of-life questions, “Why am I here?,” and “What am I supposed to do with my life?” Upon seeking the wisdom of friends and acquaintances, and receiving dismal responses, I began analyzing the positive aspects of my childhood, which included a truly extraordinary relationship with my grandmother.

| So, now you are thinking, what in the world does this have to do with how I choose “Green” as my purpose? It was “natural.” See, the thing is, when I was a little girl, we were Green when Green wasn’t cool. Only, we didn’t know it!

| I remember as a child watching in awe as my grandmother handcrafted the most amazing Easter baskets I had ever seen from gallon-sized, plastic milk containers or, square, green-colored plastic, strawberry baskets. One year she made my brothers and me baskets from paper egg cartons. Among other things, I remember small, cloth dolls hand-wrought from old diapers, painted with very simple, smiling faces, and attired in hand-sewn dresses made from the remnants of Mamma’s (pronounced Mam-Muh’s) own worn out clothing. Our “Tupperware” consisted of reusing large, plastic butter tubs, plastic milk jugs (for sweet, iced-tea) jelly jars (for drinking glasses), and other items usually thrown in the trash by a lot of folks.

| Looking back on the amazing talents and resourcefulness of my grandmother, I now understand we weren’t so much Green as we were poor. But what we lacked monetarily, my grandmother more than made-up for with her creativity and ability to problem-solve. Not only was she a pioneer of the “Green” and entrepreneur of the human-spirit, but she was also a marketing genius in her ability to positively spin the view of our financial situation, convincing three small children that we didn’t need “more” we simply needed to be good stewards of what we already had been provided. We reused, reclaimed and recycled – part of the mantra of the popular and ever-growing movement toward Green living.

| Why is my purpose “Green”? I had the answer to my self-impressed, thought-provoking question all along. My inspiration was “unearthed” by remembering the proud legacy left me by my grandmother -- a gift of love, caring, and keen awareness for the needs of my family and the world around us. Simply put: “The Green thing, It’s just the right thing to do.” -- Lori R. Ritter, Owner of The Green Doel
